The Popish Plot (1679) drives a party of Tories and secret Catholics out of the city to a retreat in a remote Welsh castle--diarist Samuel Pepys among them. But the retreat turns out to be a "dark and stormy" fortnight. The castle's visitors begin to die in grotesque and mysterious ways. Will Mr. Pepys be the next to die? Or will he penetrate the mystery before it's too late? (To begin at the beginning, click on the sidebar "Part I: Prelude to Death."
